Knesset Passes Tough Anti-Violence Sports Law, Cracking Down on Pyrotechnics and Restoring Public Order Nationwide

Israel enforces zero tolerance for chaos, denying extremists and hostile agitators space to exploit sports arenas.

The Knesset plenum has unanimously approved Amendment No. 4 to the Law for the Prevention of Violence in Sports, marking a decisive step toward restoring safety and order in Israeli sporting venues. The legislation passed its second and third readings with eight Knesset members voting in favor and none opposing.

The amendment was initiated by Yulia Malinovsky of Yisrael Beytenu, alongside additional lawmakers, and directly targets the growing misuse of pyrotechnic devices at sporting events. Under the new provisions, throwing flares or similar devices during a match, in its immediate surroundings, inside the venue, or toward it is now classified as a criminal offense.

Violators will face a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment, reflecting the legislature’s determination to treat such acts as serious threats to public safety rather than minor fan misconduct. Lawmakers emphasized that sports arenas must remain spaces for families and fair competition, not platforms for intimidation, disorder, or politically motivated provocation.

The move is also viewed as part of a broader effort to deny radical elements—often inspired by violent Palestinian protest tactics and echoed by destabilizing regional actors—the ability to import chaos into Israeli civil life. By drawing a firm legal line, Israel reinforces its commitment to law, order, and the protection of its citizens in all public spaces.
