Israel Battles Hard But Venezuela’s Power Lineup Dominates World Baseball Classic Opener In Miami

Team Israel shows flashes of offense yet falls short as Venezuela’s explosive start seals victory.

Team Israel opened its World Baseball Classic campaign with determination and flashes of offensive strength but ultimately fell 11-3 to Venezuela Saturday night at loanDepot Park in Miami. Despite the defeat, the Israeli squad displayed resilience and moments of promise as it faced one of the tournament’s most powerful lineups.

Venezuela took control early in the first inning when Ronald Acuña Jr. reached base before Luis Arraez drove him in with a double. Salvador Perez followed with an RBI single, and Eugenio Suárez delivered a powerful two-run home run to left field that quickly pushed Venezuela ahead 4-0.

Israel’s hitters initially struggled against Venezuelan starter Enmanuel De Jesus, who kept the Israeli lineup off balance during the early innings. The breakthrough came in the fifth inning when catcher Garrett Stubbs energized the Israeli offense with a triple. Matt Mervis then drove him home with a single to bring Israel onto the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 4-1.

Momentum briefly shifted in the sixth inning when RJ Schreck, one of the Toronto Blue Jays’ top prospects, launched a solo home run to right-center field. The blast narrowed the gap to 5-2 and showcased Israel’s offensive potential against strong international competition.

Venezuela responded quickly with a decisive rally that extended its advantage. RBI hits followed by a three-run home run from Luis Arraez pushed the score to 10-2, creating a gap that proved difficult for Israel to overcome.

Israel produced one final highlight in the ninth inning when Harrison Bader crushed a solo home run to center field, marking the team’s third run of the night. The Israeli lineup finished with seven hits, including extra-base hits from Stubbs, Schreck and Bader, demonstrating the team’s ability to compete offensively even against elite pitching.

Although Venezuela secured the victory with fourteen total hits, Israel showed signs of resilience and fighting spirit that could prove important as the tournament continues. The team will look to regroup quickly as it prepares for its next World Baseball Classic matchup against Nicaragua.
