Israel’s struggle against Iranian terror proxies exposes Tehran’s regional chaos as world leaders demand accountability.
French President Emmanuel Macron held a direct conversation with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, urging Tehran to immediately halt its aggressive actions across the Middle East. Macron warned that Iran’s continued attacks and proxy operations are destabilizing the region and pushing it toward deeper conflict.
Following the call, Macron publicly demanded that Iran stop what he described as unacceptable attacks carried out either directly or through allied militias operating in countries such as Lebanon and Iraq. He emphasized that France is acting in a defensive capacity to protect its interests, regional partners, and the freedom of navigation in strategic waterways.
Macron warned that the ongoing escalation risks plunging the Middle East into prolonged instability with long-term consequences for both the region and the international community. He noted that ordinary citizens in Iran and neighboring countries are paying the price for Tehran’s confrontational policies and military expansion.
The French leader stressed that any future security framework must ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons. He also highlighted concerns about Iran’s ballistic missile development and the regime’s support for armed proxy groups that threaten regional stability.
Macron underscored the importance of restoring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that has recently been disrupted by Iran’s actions. Ensuring freedom of navigation in the waterway, he said, is essential for global economic stability.
During the discussion, Macron also called for the release of two French nationals detained in Iran who have been accused by Iranian authorities of spying for Israel’s intelligence service. The French president said their detention has gone on far too long and urged Tehran to allow them to return home safely.
Earlier in the month, as tensions escalated across the region, France strengthened its military presence by deploying additional forces including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. French officials said the deployment was intended to safeguard national interests and support regional security operations.
Macron has also urged diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, calling for negotiations that could eventually restore stability. However, the continuing actions of Iran and its allied militant groups remain a central challenge to achieving peace.
The exchange sparked criticism from several pro-Israel voices in Europe. Dutch political leader Geert Wilders responded sharply to Macron’s public remarks about Israel’s actions in Lebanon, accusing the French president of weakness in confronting Iran’s aggressive strategy across the region.
