US President Donald Trump is working to assemble an international coalition aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s attempt to disrupt global oil shipments triggered a severe energy crisis. The effort is intended to restore safe passage through one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes and counter Iran’s strategy of restricting international energy supplies.
Officials confirmed that Washington is currently in discussions with several countries about joining a coordinated mission to secure the waterway. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical corridor for global oil transportation, and Iran’s interference with tanker traffic has disrupted a significant portion of the world’s crude supply, sending energy prices sharply higher.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the proposed coalition would focus on ensuring that commercial vessels can safely pass through the strait while preventing Iranian forces from continuing their blockade. Trump indicated that several nations have been contacted and that the United States expects partners who rely on Middle Eastern oil to help protect the shipping route.
The American president emphasized that the mission would not require a large military deployment because Iran’s military capabilities have already been weakened by ongoing strikes carried out by the United States and Israel. Washington believes that sustained pressure has significantly reduced Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping lanes.
At the same time, US officials revealed that Trump is considering stronger measures if the blockade continues. One option under review involves targeting Iran’s major oil export hub on Kharg Island, a facility responsible for handling the vast majority of the country’s crude exports. Some officials have discussed the possibility of seizing the island entirely, which could severely disrupt the Iranian regime’s primary source of revenue.
Kharg Island lies just off Iran’s southern coast and serves as the central gateway for the country’s oil exports. Although recent military strikes have targeted nearby installations, energy infrastructure on the island has so far been largely spared. Trump has indicated that additional strikes remain possible if Iran refuses to end its interference with global shipping.
White House officials stated that no final decision has been made regarding operations targeting Kharg Island. However, they stressed that the United States will not allow Iran to control the pace of the conflict or dictate the terms of global energy security.
Iran has attempted to maintain its own oil exports while restricting those of neighboring Gulf states, allowing Iranian tankers to continue shipping crude to countries such as China while blocking other nations from using the strait. This strategy has drawn strong condemnation from Washington and its allies, who view the blockade as a direct threat to international trade and economic stability.
