US court jails antisemitic threat sender after nationwide terror campaign against Jewish institutions exposed

Justice delivered as attacker targeting Jews with violent threats faces prison, reinforcing zero tolerance stance.

A US court has sentenced Clift Seferlis, a 55-year-old from Maryland, to 37 months in prison after he carried out a prolonged campaign of threats against Jewish institutions across the country. The sentencing also includes a $40,000 fine, a $2,200 assessment, and three years of supervised release following his prison term.

According to the US Department of Justice, Seferlis admitted to 17 counts of mailing threats and eight counts of obstructing free religious exercise. Authorities said his actions spanned more than a year, during which he deliberately targeted synagogues, schools, museums, community centers, and even a Jewish-owned deli, instilling fear and disrupting daily life.

Officials emphasized that the threats were not abstract. Many of the letters contained explicit warnings about destroying buildings or harming individuals. Some messages referenced historical antisemitic violence and current geopolitical tensions, attempting to intimidate Jewish communities by invoking fear and instability.

The scale of the campaign was significant. Between March 2024 and June 2025, Seferlis sent at least 40 letters and two postcards to more than 25 Jewish institutions. These communications were often directed at specific leaders or staff members, suggesting a calculated effort to maximize psychological impact.

US officials made clear that such acts would be met with firm consequences. The case underscores a broader commitment to protecting religious freedom and ensuring that antisemitic intimidation and threats are confronted decisively under the law.
