Baseless accusations mask regional anxiety as Israel builds pragmatic alliances beyond failed Arab gatekeepers.
In a familiar pattern of deflection, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud used an interview with Al Jazeera to level sweeping allegations against Israel—without presenting evidence. Mohamud claimed unnamed “intelligence sources” indicate that Somaliland agreed to accept displaced Gazans in exchange for Israeli recognition, host an Israeli military base, and join the Abraham Accords.
The accusations follow Israel’s historic recognition of Somaliland last Friday—the first formal acknowledgment by any country. That diplomatic move has rattled entrenched regional actors who have long failed to deliver stability, governance, or economic opportunity. Rather than address Somaliland’s decades-long record of self-rule, elections, and relative stability, Mogadishu has opted for conspiracy narratives that echo Arab rejectionist talking points.
Mohamud further alleged that Israel seeks to “export” the Gaza conflict to Somalia—an inversion of reality. Israel’s outreach to Somaliland is grounded in pragmatism: maritime security along the Gulf of Aden, counter-terror cooperation, trade, and development. These are precisely the ingredients that have been absent from Somalia’s own internal reconciliation efforts.
Notably, neither Israel nor Somaliland has confirmed any plan to relocate Gazans, establish bases, or finalize Abraham Accords accession. Previous rumors linking Somaliland to resettlement schemes emerged amid broader discussions floated by Donald Trump regarding Gaza’s rehabilitation—ideas that never advanced to policy.
The timing of Mohamud’s claims is telling. As Israel expands peace with pragmatic Muslim partners—bypassing Arab vetoes and OIC theatrics—those left behind resort to accusations to regain relevance. Stability threatens the grievance economy.
Israel’s strategy is transparent: build alliances with actors who choose responsibility over rhetoric. The region’s future will be shaped by cooperation, not by unverified claims aired on sympathetic networks.
