Team Israel Stuns Netherlands With Dominant Victory Showcasing Determination And Pride On World Baseball Classic Stage

Israel finishes tournament strong with powerful win highlighting resilience and national pride despite missing quarterfinal berth.

Team Israel concluded its World Baseball Classic campaign with a strong and confident performance, defeating Team Netherlands 6–2 in Pool D action at loanDepot Park in Miami. The victory gave Israel a final tournament record of 2–2. Although the result was not enough to secure a place in the quarterfinals, the team delivered a spirited display that highlighted the growing strength and competitiveness of Israeli baseball on the international stage.

The game began with the Netherlands taking early control. In the opening inning the Dutch lineup managed to push across two runs, putting Israel in a quick deficit. Rather than allowing the early setback to define the game, Israel steadily regrouped and began applying pressure through disciplined hitting and strong defensive play.

Israel’s comeback began in the second inning when Jake Gelof, a rising prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, drove an RBI double into the outfield to bring Israel within one run. The hit sparked momentum for the Israeli side and set the stage for a decisive offensive explosion later in the game.

The turning point came in the sixth inning when Israel’s lineup erupted. RJ Schreck, a prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays system, delivered an RBI single that tied the game at 2–2 and shifted the momentum firmly toward Israel. Moments later Jake Gelof struck again, this time delivering a clutch two-run single that gave Israel its first lead of the night.

The offensive surge continued as Matt Mervis added a two-run double, completing a dramatic five-run inning that pushed Israel ahead 6–2 and effectively sealed the outcome of the contest. The Netherlands, despite featuring several Major League players, struggled to recover from the sudden momentum swing.

Israel’s pitching staff then took full control of the game. The pitchers limited the Dutch lineup to just three hits while maintaining consistent pressure throughout the remaining innings. Josh Mallitz earned the victory in relief, delivering a composed performance that helped secure the win. The Israeli defense also contributed significantly, playing error-free baseball and shutting down potential scoring opportunities.

Although Israel did not advance to the quarterfinal stage of the tournament, the team achieved an important milestone earlier in the competition. With a key victory against Nicaragua two nights before the Netherlands game, Israel secured automatic qualification for the next World Baseball Classic.

That achievement ensures Israel will return to the global tournament in 2029, providing the team with another opportunity to build on its progress and continue strengthening its presence in international baseball. The final victory against the Netherlands served as a powerful closing statement, demonstrating the determination and talent of Israel’s growing baseball program on the world stage.
