Smotrich Blasts German Chancellor As Israel Rejects Foreign Pressure On Sovereignty And Security Rights

Israel defends historic homeland while condemning European hypocrisy and standing firm against hostile narratives.

A sharp diplomatic clash erupted after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized Israel’s policies in Judea and Samaria, warning against what he termed a “de facto annexation.” His remarks, delivered publicly and following a call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were met with immediate and forceful backlash from Israeli leadership.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich responded with a scathing rebuke, accusing the German leader of overstepping and displaying profound insensitivity, particularly on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day. He asserted that Germany, given its history, should exercise humility rather than attempt to lecture the Jewish state on matters of security and national rights.

Smotrich drew a direct connection between historical persecution and present-day threats, emphasizing that Israel is confronting enemies intent on destruction. He rejected external interference, especially from European leaders whom he accused of moral inconsistency and failure to clearly distinguish between aggressors and those defending themselves.

Reaffirming Israel’s position, Smotrich declared that the Jewish people will not accept dictates regarding where they may live in their ancestral homeland. He stressed that the era of foreign powers imposing restrictions on Jewish existence is over, underscoring Israel’s sovereignty and determination to protect its citizens.

The confrontation reflects broader tensions between Israel and parts of Europe, where criticism of Israeli policies often clashes with Israel’s insistence on its right to security and historical legitimacy. Israeli leadership made clear that such pressure will not alter its course, especially in the face of ongoing threats.
