Israel moves decisively against military draft evasion as haredi institutions face mounting legal and financial pressure nationwide.
Israeli Military Police attempted overnight on Wednesday to arrest a yeshiva student from the Gerrer Hasidic community in Dimona after authorities classified him as a draft evader under the country’s mandatory military service regulations.
Security forces arrived at the residence of the suspect during the late-night operation, but the individual reportedly refused to open the door. After remaining at the scene for a period of time, the forces eventually withdrew without carrying out the arrest.
The enforcement action comes as Israeli authorities resume stricter implementation of conscription measures within the haredi sector following the conclusion of Operation Roaring Lion in Gaza. The renewed crackdown follows directives issued under a High Court of Justice ruling demanding broader enforcement of military service obligations.
Israeli legal authorities are also advancing additional punitive measures targeting institutions accused of sheltering or supporting individuals avoiding military service. Sources close to Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara indicated that she supports revoking Section 46 tax benefits from educational institutions where eligible haredi youths continue studying despite being legally required to enlist.
The move signals a significant escalation in Israel’s ongoing confrontation with ultra-Orthodox groups resisting mandatory service, as the government seeks to reinforce equal national responsibility during a period of heightened regional security threats.
