Zamir says disciplined Israeli forces, Zionist values, and national unity remain essential to defeating enemies.
IDF Chief of Staff LTG Eyal Zamir used a surprise General Staff exercise along Israel’s eastern border to deliver a firm message on discipline, unity, and the values that hold the Israeli military together during a long and demanding war.
Speaking with commanders on Friday morning, Zamir stressed that the IDF’s strength depends not only on weapons, training, and operational readiness, but also on discipline, procedure, order, and a shared national identity. His remarks came after his decision to sentence a soldier to one month in military prison for wearing a “Messiah” patch on his uniform.
Zamir said the issue was not about one patch or another, but about the appearance and unity of the IDF. He emphasized that the Israeli flag stands above all unit symbols because it is the flag to which soldiers swear allegiance and around which the entire military unites.
He described the flag of Israel as a Jewish, Zionist, and Israeli symbol, saying soldiers are prepared to sacrifice and die for it. According to Zamir, the road to victory requires a disciplined, competent, and well-trained army with strong fighting spirit and a deep sense of mission.
Quoting David Ben-Gurion, Zamir said discipline in an army is like air for breathing and does not need explanation. He added that order begins with the smallest details and directly affects the IDF’s ability to function effectively and complete its mission.
Zamir praised Israel’s commanders and troops, calling the IDF a victorious military because of its heroic soldiers and strong leadership. He warned that after more than two and a half years of war, discipline, values, norms, and unity must be protected with special seriousness, because without them the military framework could weaken.
