Washington restores pressure on controversial rapporteur accused of targeting Israel, America and spreading hostile narratives”
The United States government has officially reimposed sweeping financial sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the controversial UN special rapporteur for Palestinian Arab territories.
The sanctions were restored after a federal appeals court intervened and effectively overturned a previous order that had temporarily protected Albanese from American penalties.
A formal update on the US Treasury Department website confirmed that Albanese’s global sanctions designation is active again. The move freezes assets under US jurisdiction and cuts her off from major parts of the international financial system, including standard banking and credit card services.
Washington originally sanctioned Albanese in July 2025 over her efforts to push International Criminal Court action against American and Israeli officials, companies and executives.
Earlier this month, a federal judge temporarily blocked the sanctions, ruling that the Trump administration likely violated Albanese’s free-speech protections. However, the State Department later clarified that the temporary removal was only a legal adjustment, not a change in policy.
Albanese has long faced criticism for anti-Israel bias, including remarks about the “Jewish lobby,” efforts to frame Hamas’s October 7 massacre in “context,” and repeated accusations against Israel over Gaza.
She also drew condemnation after comments at an Al Jazeera conference in which she claimed much of the world had armed and protected Israel while speaking of humanity having a “common enemy.” Albanese later denied saying Israel was the enemy of humanity.
Israel’s mission in Geneva has described her work as politically charged activism, accusing her of promoting extremist narratives aimed at undermining the Jewish state.
The renewed sanctions send a clear message: Washington will not ignore campaigns that weaponize international institutions against Israel and America. The United States government has officially reimposed sweeping financial sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the controversial UN special rapporteur for Palestinian Arab territories.
