At an emergency UN meeting, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia claimed that the American airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities would have disastrous consequences.
Russia has issued a stark warning following the US bombing of three key nuclear facilities in Iran, describing the strikes as opening a “Pandora’s box” that could lead the world toward a catastrophic nuclear disaster.
At an emergency UN meeting on Sunday, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, expressed grave concerns over the escalating conflict. “Through their actions, the U.S. has opened a Pandora’s box,” Nebenzia said. “No one knows what new catastrophes and suffering it will bring.” He further stressed that if the escalation continues, “the Middle East will find itself on the verge of a large-scale conflict with unpredictable consequences for the entire international security system, plus the entire world might end up on the verge of a nuclear disaster.”
The remarks came after President Donald Trump confirmed that the U.S. had carried out historic airstrikes on Iran, days after Israel had initiated extensive attacks on Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. The U.S. military targeted key nuclear enrichment facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan using 30 Tomahawk missiles launched from U.S. submarines. This marked the first-ever direct U.S. strike on Iranian territory.
In a late-night address from the White House on Saturday, President Trump declared the operation a “spectacular military success.” “The objective was the destruction of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s number one state sponsor of terror,” Trump stated. He emphasized that “Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.”
Trump also praised the close cooperation between the U.S. and Israel in carrying out the strike. “I worked with Prime Minister Netanyahu like perhaps no team has ever worked before,” he said. Netanyahu, in a video statement, congratulated Trump, calling the U.S. president’s bold decision to target Iran’s nuclear sites “a historic game-changer.”
Following the attacks, the U.S. military deployed 75 precision-guided munitions, including bunker-buster bombs and more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles, striking three Iranian nuclear sites early Sunday morning.
