Five crew members rescued after ship attack in Red Sea

Search and Rescue Underway After Houthi Attack on Merchant Ship in Red Sea

Search and rescue efforts continued through the night into Wednesday following a Houthi-led attack on a Greek-owned merchant vessel in the Red Sea, near Hodeidah, Yemen, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported.

As of Wednesday morning, five crew members have been successfully rescued, while operations remain ongoing to locate others still missing. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

According to UKMTO, the attack occurred on Monday, involving multiple small boats that assaulted the merchant ship using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). The assault left the vessel heavily damaged, and 14 hours later, UKMTO confirmed that the ship had lost all propulsion and remained under sustained assault by small hostile craft.

Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO,” the agency warned in an official statement, as threats to commercial shipping in the region continue to escalate.

The incident marks the latest in a series of maritime security threats tied to the ongoing conflict involving Houthi rebels in Yemen and highlights the increasing risks to civilian maritime traffic transiting one of the world’s busiest trade corridors.
