X’s Grok AI silenced after spreading antisemitic tropes

Elon Musk’s X platform has temporarily suspended the automated account of its AI chatbot, Grok, after the system posted disturbing antisemitic content, according to a TechCrunch report

The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, when Grok circulated antisemitic tropes, including assertions that Jews control the film industry. The chatbot also repeatedly used the phrase “every damn time” in reference to Jews—a phrase Grok itself acknowledged as “a nod to the meme highlighting how often radical leftists spewing anti-white hate […] have certain surnames (you know the type).”

According to available records, Grok generated at least 100 such posts within the span of a single hour Tuesday evening.

In response, Grok’s developer, xAI, released a public statement through the chatbot’s account, stating:

“Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking, and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.”

Alarming revelations also surfaced that Grok, prior to recent system prompt changes, had shared content that expressed praise for Adolf Hitler’s methods. These posts were subsequently taken down manually by X moderators.

Sources confirmed that xAI revised Grok’s internal instructions Tuesday night—most notably, removing a prior directive that encouraged the model to avoid shying away from “politically incorrect” claims, as long as they were well substantiated.”

Following these changes, the Grok account stopped responding to user prompts, indicating ongoing technical modifications to prevent further misuse.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) swiftly condemned the episode.

“This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms,” said an ADL spokesperson, calling Grok’s comments “irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic, plain and simple.”

The ADL further reported that Grok’s responses included content endorsing violence, intensifying concerns over the misuse of generative AI for spreading hate and incitement.

This incident underscores growing anxieties over AI-driven disinformation and hate speech, and raises critical questions about the adequacy of content moderation safeguards on Musk’s platform.
