UN Israel Inquiry Panel Resigns Amid Sanctions, Ambassador Danon Demands Further Accountability

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon welcomes resignations of UN commissioners but insists more action is needed to address anti-Israel bias and restore integrity at the UN.

In a significant shake-up at the United Nations, all three commissioners of the UN Human Rights Council’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory — including East Jerusalem and Israel — have resigned, drawing a strong reaction from Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon.

Reacting on Tuesday, Danon described the move as “a step in the right direction” following growing international criticism of the commission’s impartiality and conduct.

“After U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese for exploiting her role as UN Special Rapporteur to vilify Israel, today Navi Pillay, Miloon Kothari, and Chris Sidoti also stepped down,” Danon stated. “This is progress — but the road to justice remains long.”

Danon also renewed his call for broader accountability within the UN, particularly regarding recent inflammatory rhetoric.

“We are still awaiting a public apology from UN Relief Chief Tom Fletcher, who used his platform at the Security Council to promote dangerous blood libels, falsely accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza,” he said.

Framing the resignations as only part of a larger issue, Danon emphasized that Israel will persist in confronting what it sees as systemic abuse and bias at the UN.

“We will continue to expose those who exploit senior positions to spread antisemitism and slander against Israel. The restoration of justice and moral clarity in the United Nations is not optional — it is essential.”

The resignations come amid mounting diplomatic pressure and growing scrutiny over the UN’s handling of Israeli-Palestinian affairs, particularly during the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
