President Trump signals optimistic developments in Gaza as Israel edges closer to a hostage deal with Hamas, while the IDF solidifies operational control on the ground.
In a moment of measured optimism, U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday during a White House bill signing ceremony that “we have good news on Gaza.” Without divulging specifics, the President thanked his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and hinted at broader diplomatic progress, adding, “There’s good news not only on Gaza, but on other high-level efforts we’re working on.”
Trump’s remarks came shortly after a senior Israeli political source confirmed that a potential agreement with Hamas for the release of hostages is closer than ever. “More likely than not, we will reach a deal,” the source stated. “It won’t be quick or easy—negotiating with Hamas never is—but a breakthrough is within grasp.”
According to the source, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains firmly committed to securing the hostages’ release, despite ongoing disagreements on sensitive negotiation points.
On the same day, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir conducted a high-stakes situational assessment and field tour of Gaza, accompanied by top military leadership including Southern Command chief Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor and 162nd Division Commander Brig. Gen. Sagiv Dahan.
Zamir praised the Givati Brigade for their relentless frontline efforts and surveyed combat operations in Beit Hanoun. “Your achievements are significant,” he told the troops. “We now have operational control over 75% of Gaza—a remarkable milestone.”
He also addressed the potential turning point in the conflict: “We are at a critical juncture. If a deal is reached and hostages are returned, it will be due to your bravery and sacrifice. If not, my orders are clear: escalate and expand our combat operations. We will not relent until Hamas is dismantled and Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel.”
Zamir also made it clear that whether through diplomacy or continued combat, the IDF remains fully committed to Israel’s security and to the safe return of every captive.
