Massive Protest Erupts in Rabat: Moroccans Demand Gaza Relief, End to Israel Ties

Tens of thousands of Moroccans flooded Rabat’s streets, condemning the Gaza crisis and calling for a complete break in diplomatic ties with Israel amid growing national outrage.

Rabat, Morocco – July 21, 2025 — A tidal wave of public anger swept through the Moroccan capital on Sunday as tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets, voicing their deepening frustration over Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis and demanding an immediate end to Morocco’s diplomatic relationship with Israel, AFP reported.

Demonstrators, united under a coalition of political parties and civil society organizations, waved Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) flags and hoisted placards calling for unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. The crowd’s chants—“It’s a disgrace, Gaza is under fire,” “Lift the blockade,” and “No to normalization”—reverberated through central Rabat.

The protest, which filled city squares and arteries with symbolic fury, was co-organized by groups including the Islamist Al-Adl Wal-Ihssane movement and several left-wing political factions, signaling a growing national backlash against Morocco’s 2020 normalization deal with Israel under the U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023, mass protests have become a recurring feature across Moroccan cities, urging the government to distance itself from Israel’s military actions and reconsider its foreign policy stance.

This latest show of public discontent follows a string of similar demonstrations:

  • In December 2023, thousands marched in Rabat demanding an end to diplomatic normalization.
  • In July 2024, mass rallies in Tangier echoed widespread solidarity with Gaza.
  • In April 2025, Rabat once again witnessed tens of thousands protesting Israel’s prolonged military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The sustained momentum of these protests underscores deep societal divisions within Morocco over the Abraham Accords and raises urgent questions about the future of Moroccan-Israeli relations amid ongoing Middle East volatility.
