A midday shooting at Fort Stewart, Georgia left at least five soldiers wounded before the gunman was swiftly apprehended.
The U.S. Army’s Fort Stewart base in Georgia was plunged into chaos Wednesday morning after an active shooter opened fire, injuring multiple soldiers and forcing a full-scale lockdown of the sprawling military installation.
The incident unfolded shortly after 11:00 a.m. EST, when base officials issued urgent alerts via social media:
“Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors,” the advisory read. “Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership.”
Initial reports from Fort Stewart–Hunter Army Airfield indicate at least five soldiers were injured in the attack. All were rushed to Winn Army Community Hospital for treatment; their current conditions have not been disclosed.
The suspect was apprehended within 30 minutes of the first shots being fired, bringing an end to the immediate threat. By noon, lockdown orders were lifted for parts of the base, though other areas remained sealed off for continued security sweeps.
Military officials have not yet identified the shooter or speculated on a possible motive. Investigators from military law enforcement and federal agencies are now on scene, piecing together the events leading up to the violence.
Fort Stewart — the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi — houses tens of thousands of soldiers and their families. The shooting marks one of the most serious internal security incidents at the base in recent years.
