In a combative exchange with Piers Morgan, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee accuses Hamas of profiting off Gaza’s hunger, defends Israel’s moral code, and calls slain Al Jazeera correspondent a Hamas asset.
In a heated Monday interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee unleashed a blistering critique of Hamas while staunchly defending Israel’s actions in Gaza — particularly the controversial killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, whom Israel says was also a senior Hamas operative.
“Why does Hamas hate the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)?” Huckabee asked rhetorically, referring to the Israeli-led food relief program. “In negotiations just two and a half weeks ago, Hamas demanded GHF be shut down. Why? Because GHF’s method of delivering food undermines their monopoly over Gaza’s food market — and it’s costing them money. They don’t care about people eating. They care that they eat.”
Taking aim at Hamas leadership’s hypocrisy, Huckabee said:
“Look at their leaders — they’re well-fed. None of them are hungry. Honestly, instead of food, they could use some Ozempic.”
The Journalist Controversy
Morgan pressed Huckabee over the IDF’s targeted killing of Anas al-Sharif, a Gaza-based Al Jazeera correspondent. Israel presented documents and photos linking al-Sharif to Hamas, but outlets like the BBC questioned the evidence.
Huckabee was unmoved:
“There are photos of him hugging the head of Hamas and yucking it up. Evidence suggests he was an asset. If it’s proven otherwise, that’s a different story — but right now, the evidence points that way.”
Drawing an analogy, Huckabee compared the case to a sports referee secretly joining one team mid-game — except, he stressed, “this isn’t a game — people are dying every day.”
On Press Access and Palestinian Journalists
When Morgan noted that more than 200 Palestinian journalists have died since the war began and that foreign press is barred from entering Gaza, Huckabee stood firm:
“If I have to take the word of the Israelis or Hamas, I’ll lean with the Israelis. They’re a much better country with a much higher moral code.”
Still, he left room for accountability:
“If someone can prove they killed an innocent journalist, then yes — investigate. Hold people accountable. But we don’t know that right now.”
A Final Blow at Hamas
Huckabee closed by reminding viewers of Hamas’s October 7 massacre:
“It’s disingenuous to pretend this was just an innocent journalist when there’s evidence of ties to a bloodthirsty cult that couldn’t get enough of the blood on their hands.”
The interview underscored Huckabee’s unwavering alignment with Israel’s security narrative — and his unflinching portrayal of Hamas as both a cynical profiteer of Gaza’s misery and a ruthless enemy of peace.
