Trump Sparks Uproar With Claim on Gaza Hostages: “Probably Not 20 Alive Anymore”

Donald Trump ignited controversy by suggesting fewer than 20 hostages remain alive in Gaza, clashing with Israeli officials who insist 50 are still held by Hamas.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump set off a political firestorm Friday after asserting that the number of living hostages held by Hamas in Gaza is likely fewer than 20 — contradicting official Israeli figures.

“I’m the one that got all of the hostages out. If it wasn’t for me, they wouldn’t be out… Now they have 20, but the 20 is actually probably not 20, because a couple maybe aren’t around any longer. It’s a terrible thing,” Trump told reporters, stressing that Israel should have already launched a rapid rescue mission.

Trump claimed Hamas was ready to negotiate further, adding, “We’ll give you 10, we’ll give you 10… I don’t know what Israel is doing, but the situation has to end. It’s extortion.”

His comments, however, were swiftly challenged. Gal Hirsch, Israel’s Coordinator for Captives and Missing, flatly dismissed any change to the official numbers:

  • 20 hostages confirmed alive
  • 2 in serious condition
  • 28 confirmed deceased

Meanwhile, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum issued a sharp rebuke:
“Mr. President, there are 50 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. For us, each and every one of them represents an entire world… Our sacred duty is to prevent sacrifice and bring them all home.”

The clash underscores the deep sensitivity — and explosive politics — surrounding the fate of the remaining captives, with Trump’s remarks pressuring both Israel and Hamas amid stalled negotiations.
