Former Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy Shot Dead in Lviv

Andriy Parubiy, ex-speaker of Ukraine’s parliament and influential lawmaker, was gunned down in Lviv on Saturday, sending shockwaves through the nation.

Ukraine was jolted on Saturday after Andriy Parubiy, a prominent lawmaker and former Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament), was shot dead in the western city of Lviv.

Local authorities confirmed the assassination, which took place in broad daylight, though details surrounding the shooter and motive remain unclear. Emergency services rushed Parubiy to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

Parubiy, 53, was a key political figure known for his role during the Euromaidan revolution of 2014 and his strong stance against Russian aggression. He served as Speaker of parliament from 2016 to 2019 and remained an influential voice in Ukraine’s political landscape.

The killing comes as Ukraine continues to face relentless Russian strikes and internal strains amid the ongoing war. President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to address the nation in response to what many fear could further destabilize Ukraine at a critical moment.

Law enforcement agencies have launched a large-scale investigation, with security heightened across Lviv and other Ukrainian cities. Officials have not ruled out Russian involvement or internal political motives behind the attack.

The assassination marks one of the highest-profile political killings in Ukraine in recent years, raising urgent concerns over the country’s security as the war with Russia grinds on.
