Widow of Legendary Land Redeemer Moshe Zar: “He Did the Work the State Should Have Done — Preparing the Ground for Sovereignty”

At the Samaria Sovereignty Conference, Yael Zar movingly recounted how her late husband Moshe Zar spent decades redeeming land across Judea and Samaria, laying the foundations for Israeli sovereignty after 1967.

At the Samaria Sovereignty Conference hosted by Arutz Sheva and the Samaria Council, Yael Zar, widow of the late land redeemer Moshe Zar, offered a stirring tribute to her husband’s lifelong mission to advance sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.

Yael recalled how Moshe began his mission immediately after the Six-Day War, when the biblical heartland was liberated:

  • “He set himself a goal: sovereignty over the territories of the entire Land of Israel.”
  • He purchased land directly from Arabs who trusted him deeply: “He never cheated them, he paid the full price, and he even exchanged their money into dinars with Arab money changers. There was complete trust in him.”
  • Many would arrive secretly at night to sell land in Karnei Shomron, knowing Moshe was a man of honesty and respect.

Yael emphasized that for both of them, redeeming land was already sovereignty in action: “For Moshe, and for me, this was the imposition of sovereignty over the territories of the whole Land of Israel.”

She shared a story from a Member of Knesset during the mourning period. The MK admitted he once asked Moshe why he kept buying land if the future of the territories was uncertain. Moshe replied:

“To me, the very fact that I am redeeming land for the State of Israel is the point. Even if Arabs live there for now, eventually the land will belong to the whole Land of Israel — and I am the one who redeemed it.”

This honesty and determination, Yael said, transformed skeptics into allies. “Moshe often said, ‘I am doing the work the state should have done. I am preparing for sovereignty.’”

Looking ahead, Yael urged the settlement movement to press forward: “The settlement world should move toward sovereignty. People should feel like citizens in their own country.”

Her remarks resonated as a reminder that sovereignty is not only a political decision but the fruit of decades of personal sacrifice, vision, and quiet nation-building by pioneers like Moshe Zar.
