Global Internet Meltdown: Massive AWS Outage Cripples Major Apps from Snapchat to Lloyds Bank

A worldwide Amazon Web Services failure disrupts dozens of platforms—including financial networks, communication apps, and gaming giants like Fortnite.

The digital world was thrown into chaos on Monday as Amazon Web Services (AWS), the backbone of global cloud infrastructure, suffered a massive operational breakdown—disrupting critical platforms across continents and exposing the world’s dangerous dependence on centralized tech power.

The failure, which originated in AWS’s US-EAST-1 region on the American East Coast, swiftly cascaded through Europe, Latin America, and Asia—impacting a staggering range of services including Snapchat, Zoom, Alexa, Canva, Perplexity, Prime Video, and even major banks like Lloyds.

AWS confirmed the incident as an “operational failure across multiple services”, prompting frantic efforts by its engineers to restore functionality. According to The Verge, the crash triggered spikes in error rates across hundreds of platforms, while Business Insider reported that more than 35 AWS service clusters were affected simultaneously.

The disruption also hit Fortnite, one of the world’s most-played online games, whose developer announced: “A power outage affecting several online services is also affecting Fortnite logins. We are investigating and will update players as soon as possible.”

In Germany and Sweden, media outlets reported that Venmo, Prime Video, and dozens of regional apps were rendered inaccessible. The ripple effect highlights the unprecedented fragility of global digital infrastructure, where a single malfunction in one corporate data hub can paralyze governments, banks, businesses, and individuals worldwide.

Cybersecurity analysts warned that the event is a wake-up call for technological sovereignty—urging countries, including Israel, to invest in independent, secure cloud ecosystems capable of maintaining continuity even when global giants falter.
