Hegseth Rallies Indo-Pacific Allies: U.S. Seals 10-Year Defense Pact with India, Warns China Over Aggression in South China Sea and Taiwan

At the ASEAN Defense Summit in Malaysia, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth deepened alliances with India and regional partners while issuing a direct warning to Beijing: Washington will defend Indo-Pacific stability against Chinese expansionism.

In a pivotal diplomatic offensive at the ASEAN Defense Summit in Malaysia, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth launched a series of high-stakes meetings aimed at strengthening security alliances and countering China’s military assertiveness. Hegseth’s engagements with counterparts from China and India set the tone for a summit that underscored America’s reassertion of leadership in Asia’s strategic balance.

“We will stoutly defend our interests and maintain the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific,” Hegseth wrote on X after confronting China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun, expressing grave concern over Beijing’s actions in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.

🇮🇳 U.S. and India Cement a 10-Year Defense Pact

Hegseth hailed the newly signed 10-year defense cooperation framework with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh as “a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence.”

“It’s a significant step for our two militaries—a roadmap for deeper and more meaningful collaboration,” Hegseth told reporters.

Despite recent trade tensions—including Washington’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods over Russian oil imports—the agreement signals a dramatic reaffirmation of the U.S.-India strategic partnership. Both nations are recalibrating ties amid shared concerns over China’s military buildup and expansionism.

🚢 China’s Grey-Zone Warfare Under Fire

Malaysia and the U.S. jointly condemned China’s grey-zone tactics, which include deploying coast guard and “research” vessels to intimidate regional neighbors.
Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin declared:

“Hydrographic research conducted under the protection of coast guard vessels is a clear provocation and threat to sovereignty.”

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, overlapping the exclusive economic zones of Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, and Indonesia—a claim repeatedly challenged by international law.

🌏 ASEAN Balances Amid U.S.-China Rivalry

The summit, attended by delegations from Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Russia, highlighted Southeast Asia’s growing anxiety over Beijing’s ambitions and the importance of U.S. military presence as a stabilizing force.

President Donald Trump, addressing ASEAN leaders remotely, reaffirmed Washington’s commitment:

“The United States is with you 100%, and we intend to be a strong partner for many generations.”

The U.S. already maintains extensive defense agreements with the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, involving annual joint drills and base-sharing—crucial to deterring Chinese aggression.

☢️ Trump’s Shock Directive: Nuclear Tests to Resume

In a dramatic move overshadowing the summit, President Trump announced his order to resume U.S. nuclear weapons testing, citing China’s “rapid and opaque expansion” of its nuclear arsenal.

The decision drew alarm from ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, who reaffirmed the bloc’s opposition to nuclear arms and its goal of a nuclear-free Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pledged to double defense spending to 2% of GDP, aligning with U.S. calls for greater burden-sharing. Hegseth called the U.S.-Japan alliance “critical to deterring Chinese military aggression.”

🕯️ Strategic Reality: A New Cold War Line

The message from Malaysia was unmistakable: Washington is reclaiming its deterrent posture across Asia.
While Beijing insists its coast guard acts “professionally,” its island-building, maritime intimidation, and airspace violations tell another story. The Indo-Pacific is fast becoming the new front line between authoritarian expansionism and the free world’s defense alliances—and this time, India stands at the heart of that resistance.
