Federal and local investigators are probing an intentional pre-dawn explosion at Harvard Medical School’s Goldenson Building, with two unidentified suspects caught fleeing the scene.
Midnight Blast Rocks Harvard Campus
A tense investigation is underway in Boston after an apparent intentional explosion shook the Harvard Medical School campus early Saturday morning.
According to USA Today, the blast occurred around 2:48 a.m. inside the Goldenson Building, a major research facility at Harvard’s Longwood Medical Area.
The Boston Fire Department’s Arson Unit quickly determined that the explosion was “intentional.” No injuries were reported, but the damage and timing of the incident have raised alarm within federal law enforcement circles.
🚨 FBI, Police Flood Scene — “Active Investigation” Underway
The Boston Police Department, Harvard University Police, and the FBI immediately cordoned off the site.
“The FBI is on the scene and we’re assisting our partners at Harvard with what is a very active investigation,” said FBI spokesperson Kristen Setera.
A bomb squad sweep confirmed that no additional explosive devices were present in the building, though investigators described signs of “deliberate placement” at the point of detonation.
🕵️ Two Suspects Flee Scene — CCTV Images Released
According to the Harvard University Police Department, an officer responding to a fire alarm saw two unidentified individuals fleeing the building moments before the blast.
“The officer attempted to stop the individuals before proceeding to the floor where the alarm had been triggered,” the department said in a statement.
Authorities have since released CCTV images of the pair — both wanted for questioning. Law enforcement sources confirmed that the individuals were seen near the explosion site shortly before the incident.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has joined the investigation amid growing concern that the explosion may have been intended as an act of sabotage or intimidation linked to political or ideological motives.
🏫 Harvard on Alert, Campus Secured
Although no one was injured, Harvard has tightened campus security, restricting access to laboratories and administrative buildings. The university urged staff and students to report any suspicious activity immediately.
Boston authorities have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat, but the deliberate nature of the blast has rattled the academic and medical communities alike.
🇺🇸 Federal Response and Broader Concerns
Federal officials are analyzing whether the Harvard explosion fits into a broader pattern of politically motivated campus attacks that have surfaced across U.S. universities in recent months.
Investigators are focusing on whether critical biomedical research housed in the Goldenson Building was targeted — potentially linking the blast to anti-science or extremist movements.
As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made, and both suspects remain at large.
