President Donald Trump ignited a political firestorm this Thanksgiving after announcing plans for a permanent freeze on immigration from “third world countries,” while lambasting Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and renewing warnings about extremist elements slipping into the U.S. under the guise of humanitarian migration.
Trump’s Thanksgiving message quickly went viral. In it, he referred to Walz with a disparaging remark, blasting the governor for what he called dangerous negligence in handling Minnesota’s growing Somali population—America’s largest, and one that includes pockets of radicalization that U.S. intelligence has repeatedly warned about.
Critics on X (formerly Twitter) condemned Trump’s language as offensive and outdated, while supporters hailed the speech as a much-needed wake-up call as the country grapples with rising security threats tied to failed Arab and African regimes.

Trump directly targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar, claiming she “probably” entered the country illegally, accusing her of representing a community deeply affected by clan violence, extremist networks, and the collapse of Somalia—a nation he described as “essentially not even a country,” lacking functioning government, security forces, or institutions.
He argued that unchecked migration has allowed the U.S. and other Western nations to become “divided, disrupted, murdered, beaten, and laughed at,” blaming the influx of migrants from collapsing Arab and African states.
The timing was no coincidence: Trump’s remarks came just hours after an Afghan national—brought into the U.S. under a 2021 Biden-era refugee program—was charged with attempted murder for shooting two National Guard troops near the White House. The assailant had been granted asylum earlier this year.
Trump responded by insisting the U.S. will “permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries” to allow the national security and immigration systems to stabilize.
Gov. Walz fired back with a sarcastic jab referencing Trump’s recent MRI at Walter Reed:
“Release the MRI results.”
