Israel mourns with Australia as terror targets Jewish faith and resilience shines brighter than fear.
President Isaac Herzog held urgent calls with David Ossip, President of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, and Rabbi Levi Wolff of Sydney’s Central Synagogue following the devastating terror attack on a Chanukah gathering in Sydney.
During the conversations, President Herzog conveyed the profound grief felt throughout Israel, describing a nation shaken by the loss of life as Jews gathered to mark the first night of Chanukah. On behalf of the State and people of Israel, he extended condolences to the bereaved families, prayers for the wounded, and unwavering solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community.
“We are utterly shocked and bereaved,” Herzog told Ossip. “The entire nation of Israel feels that its heartbeat has stopped. Please convey our deepest condolences and our prayers for recovery. We stand with you, and we are here for you.”
Ossip briefed the President on the grave security situation, including community lockdown measures following the attack, which claimed multiple lives, among them a senior rabbi. Herzog expressed full confidence in the community’s leadership and reiterated Israel’s readiness to assist in any way required.
In his call with Rabbi Wolff, President Herzog offered personal condolences for the murder of a Chabad rabbi and shared words of strength, emphasizing Jewish resilience. “The Jewish people never give up,” he said. “We are an eternal people. The candles will be lit again—tomorrow and beyond—across the world.”
Rabbi Wolff responded that despite the pain, the community would emerge stronger, reaffirming a shared commitment to faith, unity, and life.
