US President Donald Trump has launched a sweeping federal lawsuit in Miami against Britain’s BBC, seeking at least $10 billion over a documentary edit he says falsely portrayed him as inciting violence ahead of the January 6, 2021 events at the US Capitol.
The suit alleges defamation and violations of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, arguing the BBC spliced together selective excerpts from Trump’s speech—highlighting phrases like “fight like hell” while omitting his explicit call for peaceful protest. Trump’s legal team says the edit created a false and damaging impression of a direct call to violence.
Although the BBC has apologised, admitted an error of judgment, and acknowledged the edit was misleading, it maintains there is no legal basis for the lawsuit. The controversy has already triggered a crisis at the publicly funded broadcaster, culminating in the resignations of two senior executives and the decision not to rebroadcast the “Panorama” episode.
Legal analysts note the BBC’s mandatory license-fee funding complicates any potential settlement, making a payout politically explosive in the UK.
