Herzog warns antisemitism’s surge threatens Jews globally, urging unity as Israel confronts terror and moral hypocrisy.
President Isaac Herzog addressed a solemn ceremony in Jerusalem marking one week since the deadly terror attack in Sydney, declaring the worldwide surge in antisemitism a “global emergency.” Speaking during the final candle of Hanukkah, he affirmed Israel’s unwavering solidarity with Australian Jewry, emphasizing that distance cannot dull shared pain or shared resolve.
The gathering at the National Institutions Building included representatives of the World Zionist Organization, Australian diplomatic officials, and bereaved families. Herzog conveyed condolences, prayers for the wounded, and a promise of personal outreach, underscoring Jewish resilience and unity in the face of terror.
Warning that hatred of Jews is accelerating across continents, Herzog called for decisive leadership, societal rejection of lies and bias, and firm international action—contrasting Israel’s moral clarity with the silence, appeasement, and double standards that too often enable extremism. He honored civilians who intervened during the attack, praising their courage and humanity.
Concluding with resolve, Herzog declared that terror will not extinguish Jewish light, affirming the enduring strength of the Jewish people: “Am Yisrael Chai.”
