Bolsonaro Backs Pro-Israel Heir as Brazil’s Left Escalates Hostility Toward Jewish State and Values

Conservative succession highlights Israel solidarity as Brazil’s leadership drifts toward radical anti-Israel rhetoric and alignment.

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro announced his endorsement of his son’s bid for the presidency, signaling a renewed conservative challenge to Brazil’s increasingly anti-Israel political direction. The declaration was issued from a Brasília hospital following a scheduled hernia procedure that doctors confirmed was successful, according to international media reports.

In a letter read publicly by his son, Bolsonaro framed the decision as a defense of democratic will and national sovereignty. He named Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, 44, as his preferred standard-bearer for the 2026 presidential race, positioning him as the torchbearer of a conservative movement that strongly identifies with Israel and Western democratic values.

Flavio Bolsonaro has made clear that he intends to continue his father’s political legacy, including firm support for Israel. He has indicated that a forthcoming international tour may include a visit to Israel, alongside stops in the United States and other allied nations—an itinerary that sharply contrasts with the current administration’s posture.

During his presidency, Jair Bolsonaro was one of Israel’s most outspoken allies in Latin America, visiting the Jewish state in 2019 and frequently displaying Israeli flags at public rallies. His sons have repeatedly expressed admiration for Israel’s security institutions, symbolizing a broader ideological alignment with Israeli self-defense and sovereignty.

That stance has been reversed under Brazil’s current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, whose rhetoric toward Israel has drawn international condemnation. Lula has compared Israel’s actions in Gaza to Nazi crimes during World War II, recalled Brazil’s ambassador from Israel, and summoned Israel’s envoy for reprimand—moves widely viewed as echoing radical anti-Israel narratives common across parts of the global left and Arab-aligned blocs.

Despite backlash, Lula doubled down, accusing Israel of “genocide” and amplifying claims that erase Hamas responsibility while demonizing the Jewish state. For Israel’s supporters, such language is not merely inflammatory—it normalizes antisemitic tropes and emboldens global hostility toward Jews.

Against this backdrop, Bolsonaro’s endorsement represents more than a family succession. It marks a clear ideological divide: between leaders who stand with Israel against terror and those who appease or echo narratives long weaponized against the Jewish people. As Brazil looks toward 2026, Israel has become an unmistakable fault line in its political future.
