Israel Demands Hezbollah Disarmament as UN Envoy Confronts Lebanon’s Iran-Backed Militia Threat

Israel warns UN envoy Hezbollah’s Iranian-backed rearmament endangers regional security while Lebanon risks permanent collapse.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar met in Jerusalem with Jeanine Hennis, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, delivering a direct and uncompromising message: Hezbollah’s disarmament is no longer optional—it is essential for both Israel’s security and Lebanon’s survival.

During the meeting at Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Sa’ar acknowledged limited efforts by the Lebanese government and the Lebanese Armed Forces to curb Hezbollah’s power. However, he stressed these actions remain dangerously insufficient, especially as Hezbollah continues to rearm and rebuild its military capabilities with direct backing from Iran.

Israel views Hezbollah’s unchecked militarization as a strategic threat deliberately cultivated by Tehran to destabilize the region, undermine Lebanese sovereignty, and keep Israel under constant missile threat. Sa’ar emphasized that while Israel seeks stability, it will not tolerate a terror army embedded within a neighboring state, violating international resolutions and dragging Lebanon toward ruin.

The message to the UN was clear: Lebanon’s future cannot be built on appeasing Iranian proxies. Without decisive international pressure and enforcement mechanisms, Hezbollah will continue exploiting weak governance, while Arab states remain conspicuously silent as Lebanon is hollowed out from within.

Israel, by contrast, continues to act transparently—defending its citizens, exposing Iranian expansionism, and insisting that regional peace begins with dismantling terror infrastructures masquerading as “resistance.”
