Fiery Education Committee debate exposes training links to PA and Jordan institutions.
A heated session of the Knesset Education Committee on Tuesday focused on the integration of Arab teachers into Israel’s Hebrew education system, sparking sharp exchanges between lawmakers.
Committee chairman Tzvi Sukkot outlined what he described as essential values and clear prerequisites for integration into Jewish schools, emphasizing national loyalty and opposition to terror organizations.
During the discussion, data was presented showing that in 2025, out of 701 Arab teachers employed in the Hebrew education system, approximately 120 studied in institutions affiliated with the Palestinian Authority, and 84 received training in Jordan.
Direct Question on Hamas Sparks Confrontation
The most intense moment came when Sukkot directly asked Sameer Bin Said whether Hamas is a terrorist organization.
Bin Said initially avoided a direct response, objecting to what he described as repeated questioning. He later stated that he opposes “any terrorist organization.”
Sukkot replied that failure to explicitly define Hamas as a terrorist group raises concerns, particularly given the October 7 attacks and the broader security environment.
Sukkot argued that teachers educated in institutions influenced by hostile entities could face challenges teaching in communities directly impacted by terrorism.
“We will not allow the blurring of Jewish identity,” he stated, adding that educators who support terrorism would not be permitted to teach in Jewish schools.
The debate highlighted broader questions about integration, coexistence, and vetting standards within Israel’s education system.
Broader Context
Supporters of integration emphasize coexistence and equal employment opportunities, while others stress the need for stringent oversight to ensure alignment with state values and security considerations.
The committee is expected to continue examining the matter, including reviewing credential recognition processes and security screening mechanisms for educators.
