Attack on sacred Jewish site exposes growing antisemitism while authorities move swiftly to protect communities.
Federal prosecutors in the United States have filed criminal charges against a New Jersey resident accused of deliberately damaging religious property at the global headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Brooklyn. The case has drawn national attention as concerns continue to rise over increasing antisemitic incidents across major American cities.
According to the United States Department of Justice, a criminal complaint unsealed on March 2 alleges that 36-year-old Dan Sohail of Carteret, New Jersey intentionally targeted the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of New York City.
Investigators state that the incident occurred on January 28 when the suspect drove to a side entrance of the historic synagogue complex. Authorities say he exited the vehicle and removed protective barriers positioned near the entrance. Prosecutors allege that he then motioned for pedestrians nearby to move away from the area before returning to his vehicle.
According to the federal complaint, the suspect proceeded to drive his car directly into the entrance of the building. Officials say he then reversed the vehicle and rammed the doorway multiple additional times, striking the structure repeatedly until the door was knocked completely off its hinges. Despite the severity of the impact, no injuries were reported.
The Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters, often referred to as 770 Eastern Parkway, is one of the most important centers of Jewish religious life and serves as a global hub for the movement’s educational and outreach activities. The site attracts thousands of visitors, students and worshippers each year and holds deep symbolic importance for the international Jewish community.
Law enforcement authorities emphasized that the attack placed people nearby at significant risk. Federal Bureau of Investigation officials stated that the deliberate destruction of religious property represents a serious federal offense, particularly when it targets a place of worship.
James Barnacle, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York Field Office, said the suspect’s actions endangered many individuals who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident. He emphasized that federal authorities, alongside local police, remain committed to protecting religious institutions and ensuring that worshippers can gather safely without fear of violence.
The investigation has also involved cooperation with the New York City Police Department, which continues to monitor security around religious sites throughout the city.
The case emerges amid a broader surge in antisemitic incidents reported across the United States, particularly in New York, home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the world. Jewish community leaders have warned that rising hostility toward Jewish institutions has created an atmosphere of concern and heightened security.

The suspect appeared in federal court in Brooklyn where the charges were formally presented. If convicted, he could face significant penalties under federal statutes governing the destruction of religious property and threats against places of worship.
