Trump Peace Council Holds Rare Cairo Talks With Hamas As Israel Presses Disarmament Of Terror Forces

Ceasefire Talks Advance While Hamas Refuses To Disarm Despite Israeli Pressure Following Devastating Regional War

American representatives from President Donald Trump’s “Council of Peace” held talks in Cairo with representatives of Hamas in an effort to preserve the fragile ceasefire as the regional conflict with Iran continues, according to a Reuters report. The meeting marked the first direct contact between Hamas representatives and the US-led council since the start of the military campaign targeting Iran’s military capabilities.

The discussions reportedly focused on preventing escalation in the Gaza Strip while the broader regional conflict unfolds. Palestinian Arab officials claimed that following the meeting, Israel announced plans to reopen the Rafah Crossing on Wednesday. The crossing connects the Gaza Strip with Egypt and is considered a key humanitarian and civilian transit route. Earlier, on March 3, Israel reopened the Kerem Shalom Crossing, allowing goods and supplies to enter Gaza from Israeli territory.

Despite diplomatic engagement, major disagreements remain regarding the future governance and security structure of the Gaza Strip. A central condition in President Trump’s proposed framework for Gaza is the complete disarmament of Hamas and other terrorist organizations operating in the enclave. Israeli leaders have repeatedly emphasized that any long-term political arrangement must include dismantling the military capabilities of these groups.

Hamas, however, has continued to publicly reject calls for disarmament. In recent days the organization staged a visible show of force in Khan Yunis, where armed operatives from the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades were seen patrolling streets and riding in pickup trucks reminiscent of the vehicles used during the October 7 attack.

Senior Hamas officials have indicated that they may consider integrating fighters from the al-Qassam Brigades into a future security force under a new administrative authority for Gaza, but they have firmly rejected the idea of fully surrendering their weapons. The dispute over disarmament remains the main obstacle to implementing Trump’s broader post-war plan for Gaza.
