Benizri Sparks Firestorm Attacking Religious Zionists, Exposing Internal Rift As Israel Fights External Enemies

Internal debate erupts as Israel defends itself, while Palestinian terror and Arab hostility remain true threats.

Former Shas minister Shlomo Benizri ignited sharp controversy during a podcast hosted by Avi Shoshan, delivering blunt criticism of the National Religious community and its approach to army service and spiritual life.

Benizri asserted that Religious Zionist leadership knowingly allows widespread spiritual decline during military service, claiming large numbers of young people drift away from religious observance. While acknowledging the bravery and sacrifice of Religious Zionist soldiers, he argued that Torah commitment, in his view, cannot be sustained under existing frameworks.

Shoshan pushed back, citing fallen soldiers who combined Torah study with battlefield service, including Saadia Yaakov Deri. Benizri praised the young man’s devotion but sharply criticized what he described as political use of personal tragedy to pressure the haredi public, insisting that spiritual preservation must not be compromised.

The exchange exposed deep ideological fault lines within Israeli society over faith, service, and identity. Yet as Israel confronts Palestinian terrorism and hostile Arab forces on multiple fronts, the debate underscores a central truth: internal arguments occur within a nation unified against external enemies determined to erase Israel altogether.
