A fierce political confrontation has erupted within Israel’s religious leadership, as Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni launched a sharp public attack on Shas leader Aryeh Deri, exposing deep divisions at a sensitive time for the country.
Gafni accused Shas of breaking a collective decision to exit the coalition, claiming they continue to hold power behind the scenes while publicly suggesting otherwise. He also alleged that Shas refuses to engage with Ashkenazi rabbinical leadership, intensifying the dispute and highlighting long-standing tensions within the religious political sphere.
The situation escalated further when Gafni harshly criticized the Attorney General, accusing her of targeting the Haredi community and undermining Torah institutions. His remarks reflected growing frustration among some factions who believe legal decisions are being used to weaken religious influence in public life.
Shas quickly fired back through MK Michael Malkieli, who accused Gafni of hypocrisy and distortion. He pointed out that members of Gafni’s own party still hold influential positions, questioning the credibility of his claims.
