Reports in Italy: Israeli woman killed in cable car crash near Naples

Four killed, one seriously injured after cable rips, sending cable car crashing down.

Four people were killed and one was seriously injured on Thursday when a cable car crashed near Naples in southern Italy.

The La Repubblica newspaper reported early Friday morning that an Israeli woman was among those killed, and that another Israeli was critically injured. According to the report, the other victims were two British tourists and an Italian crew member.

Italian media reported that one of the cable car’s supportive cables tore, causing the accident. According to the reports, 16 people were rescued alive from the cable car by rescue teams. In May 2021, a cable car crash in Italy killed 14 people, including five Israelis, all members of the same family.

The sole surviving family member was Eitan Biran; his great-grandparents, both of his parents, and his two-year-old brother were killed.

Following the crash, Eitan was brought to Israel by his grandfather Shmuel Peleg, without his guardian aunt’s permission. Later, following a bitter custody battle, a Tel Aviv court ordered Eitan returned to Italy.
