President Trump is reportedly exploring plans to derail far-left NYC mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “communist” threat to the city’s future.
Though no longer a New Yorker by residence, President Donald Trump is considering an explosive return to New York politics — this time, to thwart Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, whom he branded a “communist lunatic” unfit to lead the city.
According to the New York Times, Trump has been holding private strategy sessions with Republican leaders, wealthy business allies, and veteran political advisors, including pollster Mark Penn and former NYC Council president Andrew Stein, to identify which candidate — possibly Eric Adams or Andrew Cuomo — stands the best chance of stopping Mamdani’s rise.
“I think he’s terrible. He’s a communist. The last thing we need is a communist,” Trump reportedly told close associates. “I think I’m going to have a lot of fun watching him — because he has to come right through this building to get his money.”
Sources say Trump has already spoken with Cuomo about a possible independent run, with insiders believing that if Cuomo drops out, Mamdani’s path to City Hall would widen significantly. Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary, has indicated he may continue his campaign as an independent, buoyed by support from pro-Cuomo PACs and centrists alarmed by Mamdani’s policies.
Trump’s political reengagement in New York, where he once built his real estate empire, could reshape the volatile race, with some GOP strategists seeing an opportunity to galvanize anti-Mamdani voters — while others worry Trump’s presence could energize progressive turnout in a city where he remains polarizing.
🔥 Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Mamdani, a far-left New York Assemblyman and rising Democratic Socialist, has made headlines for his anti-Israel positions, refusal to condemn the slogan “Globalize the Intifada,” and murky stance on the BDS movement.
At a recent forum at B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue, Mamdani was confronted by candidate Whitney Tilson, who accused him of inciting antisemitic mobs. Mamdani responded by quoting radical Israeli activists and claiming to support “equality for all lives.”
Perhaps most controversially, Mamdani pledged to honor potential ICC arrest warrants — including any targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — if elected mayor of New York City.
⚠️ Bipartisan Backlash Mounts
Even Democrats have distanced themselves. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz slammed Mamdani for condemning Israel on October 8, 2023 — a day after the Hamas terror massacre — without denouncing Hamas itself. Trump echoed this sentiment, vowing he will do “everything in [his] power to stop Mamdani from destroying New York.”
Whether Trump formally backs Cuomo, Adams, or launches a direct media blitz, one thing is clear: the 2025 New York mayoral race is no longer just a local election — it’s becoming a national flashpoint over ideology, antisemitism, and America’s urban future.
