European Jewish Congress Rallies Behind EU Antisemitism Envoy Amid “Unfounded Attacks”

The European Jewish Congress and dozens of affiliated groups voiced firm support for Katharina von Schnurbein, praising her decade of leadership against antisemitism as critics attempt to undermine her integrity.

The European Jewish Congress (EJC) and dozens of Jewish and cultural organizations across Europe have issued a powerful show of support for Katharina von Schnurbein, the European Commission’s Coordinator on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life.

In a joint letter sent Monday to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner, the organizations condemned what they called an “unparalleled and unfounded wave of attacks” against von Schnurbein’s role and character.

“She has worked with great integrity to strengthen European policies that protect Jewish communities and ensure Jewish life can flourish across our continent,” the signatories wrote.

The letter highlighted:

  • Her mandate’s grounding in European values and democratic principles.
  • Her refusal to trivialize or ignore threats against Jews despite criticism.
  • Her role in spearheading the EU Strategy on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life, hailed as an “unprecedented milestone.”

The EJC warned that attacking von Schnurbein for defending Jewish dignity was tantamount to challenging the EU’s credibility in the fight against antisemitism.

The signatories emphasized that her initiatives — including innovative methods to mobilize governments and strengthen Jewish communities — have been studied and replicated worldwide.

“Her work has set a strong example — one that many other governments and envoys look to as a model. What she has achieved over the past decade is both significant and unprecedented. Her leadership is essential.”

With Jewish communities across Europe under renewed threat, the EJC’s endorsement underscores von Schnurbein’s status as one of the EU’s most effective champions in the battle against antisemitism.
