India’s Modi Rides Japan’s Bullet Train with PM Ishiba, Visits Semiconductor Plant in Sendai

On his Japan visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rode a bullet train with Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba to Sendai, where he toured semiconductor and high-speed rail facilities to boost India-Japan economic security ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday rode Japan’s world-famous bullet train from Tokyo to Sendai alongside his counterpart Shigeru Ishiba, sharing glimpses of their journey on social media.

With Prime Minister Modi to Sendai. Continuing from last night, I’m accompanying him from inside the car,” Ishiba posted, as the two leaders traveled together.

Upon arrival in Sendai, the leaders met Indian loco pilots training with the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and inspected the cutting-edge ALFA-X high-speed train prototype. They also received a technical briefing from JR East’s chairman.

Modi’s visit to Sendai highlighted the deepening India-Japan partnership in high-tech and economic security sectors. The Prime Minister toured an upcoming semiconductor wafer fabrication plant in Ohira Village, Miyagi Prefecture. The facility, developed by Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) in partnership with SBI Holdings and Japanese investors, is part of the Japan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (JSMC) venture. It represents one of Japan’s largest pushes to revive its chip-making industry.

India and Japan are increasingly aligning on semiconductors, AI, clean energy, and critical minerals—pillars of their growing special strategic and global partnership.

During the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, the two nations adopted the “India-Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade”, outlining eight strategic directions to guide cooperation. They also signed a joint security declaration and an agreement enabling collaboration on Chandrayaan-5, a joint lunar polar exploration mission.

Earlier in Tokyo, Modi engaged with governors from 16 Japanese prefectures to discuss regional cooperation.

From Sendai, the Modi will continue his diplomatic tour, heading to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit later today.
