DC Comics has abruptly canceled all future issues of its new “Red Hood” series after just one issue, following a firestorm of backlash over the book’s writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin, who posted comments celebrating the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and has a history of defending violence, including the October 7 massacre.

In a swift and stunning move, DC Comics has canceled all existing and future orders for its newly launched comic book series, “Red Hood,” just one day after the first issue was released. While the company’s official statement did not directly name the writer or the specific incident, it condemned comments that promote hostility and violence, an apparent reference to the public statements of writer Gretchen Felker-Martin.

The official announcement from DC Comics stated: “DC Comics cancels existing orders for Red Hood #2 and Red Hood #3, and any orders for future issues of the series. DC Comics will credit retailers for all invoiced copies of Red Hood #1, inclusive of copies that may have already been sold.”

In a statement provided to Popverse, DC Comics affirmed its stance: “At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”

The company’s decision follows a surge of outrage after Felker-Martin made a series of disturbing posts on her BlueSky account regarding the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Screenshots of the now-suspended account show posts where she wrote, “Thoughts and prayers you Nazi bitch,” and another, “Hope the bullet’s okay after touching Charlie Kirk.”

This is not the first time Felker-Martin has faced criticism for her comments. Her social media history includes celebrating and defending acts of political violence and murder. Notably, she celebrated the October 7, 2023 massacre in southern Israel. On the day of the attack, she retweeted a post justifying the violence as a natural response to the living conditions in Gaza. She also wrote: “You cannot subject human beings to brutal conditions under which no hope for a meaningful future exists and then blame them for violent action taken to correct this state. Free Palestine.”

She would go on to make numerous posts defending Hamas’s “right to use violence,” while denying the existence of Israeli civilians by claiming that “settlers are not civilians – they are an occupying force.” These posts led to calls for DC to fire her, particularly from the StandWithUs organization.

In another recent and highly controversial post before the shooting, Felker-Martin reportedly wrote that she does not consider policemen “to be people.” Her BlueSky account has since been suspended.

The cancellation of the “Red Hood” series after just one issue, and the credit offered to retailers for the already-released first issue, underscores the severity of the controversy and DC Comics’ attempt to distance itself from the writer’s comments.
