Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani will meet Trump, Vance, Rubio, and top US envoys to discuss Israel’s unprecedented strike on Hamas leaders in Doha and the fragile ceasefire talks in Gaza.
Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is set to land in New York and Washington on Friday, according to Politico. His visit comes just days after Israel shocked the region with an airstrike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders.
Al Thani is expected to hold high-level meetings with President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. According to insiders, the agenda includes both the status of Gaza ceasefire negotiations and plans to expand Qatar’s defense cooperation agreement with Washington.
The diplomatic flurry follows Trump’s sharp disapproval of the Israeli strike. On Tuesday, he told reporters he was “not thrilled” with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to hit Hamas targets inside Qatar. The Wall Street Journal revealed Trump voiced his frustration in a heated phone call with Netanyahu, calling the move “not wise.” Netanyahu, however, defended the strike, stressing he had a “brief window to act” and had to seize the opportunity.
By Wednesday, a second conversation between the two leaders reportedly turned more cordial, with Trump asking if the operation had achieved its objectives.
This week’s developments have laid bare the fragile balancing act between Washington, Doha, and Jerusalem—linking hostage negotiations, counterterrorism, and regional diplomacy in one of the most tense moments of the war.
