Philippines Earthquake LIVE: 69 Dead, 150+ Injured as 6.9 Magnitude Quake Devastates Cebu

A powerful 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu in the Philippines’ Visayas region Tuesday night, killing at least 69, injuring over 150, toppling buildings and bridges, and plunging the city into darkness.

A massive 6.9-magnitude earthquake rattled the Philippines on Tuesday night, striking just before 10 p.m. near the coastal city of Cebu in the central Visayas region. The shallow quake, with a depth of just 10 km (6.2 miles), unleashed widespread destruction, leaving at least 69 people dead and more than 150 injured.

The violent tremor caused multiple buildings and bridges to collapse, while power outages swept across Cebu and surrounding towns. Rescue teams are struggling to reach trapped survivors as the region endures multiple aftershocks, including one as strong as 6.9 magnitude.

Despite the quake’s severity, monitoring agencies confirmed there was no tsunami threat. However, authorities remain on high alert as aftershocks continue to rattle the already devastated region.

The tragedy has drawn swift international condolences. The Indian Embassy in the Philippines issued a heartfelt message, stating:

“The Embassy of India extends its deepest condolences to the people affected by the earthquake in the Cebu province and to the government and people of the Philippines.”

The disaster is being described as one of the Philippines’ worst this year, adding to the nation’s struggle with frequent natural calamities. Relief operations are underway, with emergency responders racing against time to restore power, clear rubble, and rescue survivors from collapsed structures.
