Rabbi Gershon Lieder, pioneer of Israel’s Haredi healthcare system and architect of two major medical centers, passes away at age 80.
Rabbi Gershon Lieder, one of the towering builders of Israel’s Haredi healthcare infrastructure and a transformative force behind two of the community’s most important medical institutions, passed away on Monday at the age of 80.
For decades, Rabbi Lieder was a pillar of strategic leadership, vision, and relentless dedication. His life’s work shaped the medical services that today support hundreds of thousands across Israel’s Haredi sector.
From the earliest days of the Sanz-Laniado Medical Center in Netanya, Rabbi Lieder served as its founding Director-General, driving the hospital’s construction, expansion, and operational framework. Under his direction, Laniado evolved from a small, community-based project into a respected and vital regional medical center.
He later assumed the role of Director-General of Ma’aynei Hayeshua Medical Center in Bnei Brak — now considered the crown jewel of Haredi healthcare. His leadership helped transform the institution into a flagship hospital known for its advanced services, patient-centered philosophy, and strong alignment with Halachic medical guidance.
Beyond hospital leadership, Rabbi Lieder was widely recognized as a bold entrepreneurial force within the Sanz Hasidic community, helping establish and fortify numerous Hasidic institutions. His passion for elevating healthcare access within the Haredi world left an enduring legacy that will continue to serve future generations.
His passing marks the loss of a visionary who dedicated his life to ensuring that the Haredi community received medical care infused with dignity, professionalism, and Torah values.
