A vicious antisemitic attack on President Claudia Sheinbaum sparks national outrage, uniting Mexico’s Jewish community and Israel against rising hate-fueled political extremism.
Mexico was rocked this weekend by a shocking eruption of antisemitic hatred—this time aimed directly at the nation’s Jewish president, Claudia Sheinbaum, in a violent anti-government protest. Demonstrators defaced the entrance of Mexico’s Supreme Court with the words “puta judía” (“Jewish whore”), alongside a crossed-out Star of David—an unmistakable, hateful assault rooted not in politics, but in centuries-old antisemitism.
The protest, led largely by radicalized youth angered by spiraling cartel violence and corruption, quickly devolved into street chaos. Dozens were injured and arrested, but it was the explicitly antisemitic graffiti that ignited national and international outrage.
Mexico’s Jewish community issued an immediate, powerful condemnation, declaring:
“Antisemitism is discrimination under our constitution and must be rejected clearly and unequivocally.”
Though Sheinbaum rarely emphasizes her Jewish identity and has kept distance from communal activities, the attack exposed how extremists weaponize her heritage to delegitimize her leadership.
Israel responded with force. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar blasted the slur as a “despicable antisemitic and sexist attack,” demanding zero tolerance for Jew-hatred in any political arena.
This wasn’t the first time bigots targeted Sheinbaum for her Jewish roots. Former President Vicente Fox previously mocked her as a “Bulgarian Jew,” even after she publicly presented her Mexican birth certificate multiple times to shut down xenophobic conspiracy theories.
