Women of the Wall spark outrage after smuggling Torah scroll through restroom into sacred plaza

Radical activists violate Western Wall sanctity as Reform-linked group disregards halacha to stage provocation.

A faction of the Women of the Wall, a Reform-affiliated activist group, triggered widespread outrage on Friday morning after smuggling a Torah scroll through public restrooms into the women’s section of the Western Wall during Rosh Chodesh prayers—an act the Western Wall Heritage Foundation condemned as both unlawful and deeply desecrating.

According to the Foundation, members of the group deliberately bypassed all established regulations governing the holiest Jewish prayer site by sneaking the scroll through the bathrooms, an act that halachically violates the sanctity of a Torah scroll itself.
Their actions, the Foundation said, amounted to “a serious violation of the sanctity of the site and the honor of the Torah.”

In a sharply worded statement, the Foundation accused the group of staging a calculated provocation:
“A small group from ‘Women of the Wall’ blatantly violated regulations by smuggling a Torah scroll into the Western Wall plaza via the public restrooms, intentionally seeking confrontation.”

But the activists celebrated the stunt.
“Our goal is to read from the Torah at the Western Wall and bring a female voice to the site,” Women of the Wall said. “The coverings on the Torah scroll symbolize the rights we are denied. For 36 years we have fought, and we will continue.”

Traditional Jewish scholars and religious authorities emphasized that Jewish law strictly forbids taking sacred texts—including Torah scrolls—into restrooms, making the act an undeniable desecration irrespective of ideological intent.

The incident highlights a growing rift between progressive movements attempting to impose foreign religious norms onto Judaism’s holiest accessible site, and those committed to safeguarding the ancient traditions that have preserved Jewish identity for millennia—particularly as outside groups increasingly challenge Israeli sovereignty and Jewish halachic authority over sacred spaces.
