Putin Embraces New Syria Leadership, Masks Brutality While Russia Reasserts Middle East Power Against Israel

Russia shields Damascus abuses, empowering hostile Arab regimes while Israel alone defends stability and minorities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa at the Kremlin, publicly praising Damascus for “preserving unity” even as reports of violent crackdowns against minorities persist. Moscow framed the meeting as a reset following Syria’s political transition, signaling continuity of influence rather than accountability.

Putin emphasized decades-long ties and pushed for deeper trade, reconstruction contracts, and continued Russian military presence—moves widely read as entrenching Russian leverage across the Levant. He reiterated support for Syria’s territorial integrity, a phrase often used to excuse regime brutality under the guise of sovereignty.

Al-Sharaa thanked Moscow for its backing and expressed optimism about joint problem-solving, portraying the past year as a story of resilience. His delegation arrived earlier at Vnukovo International Airport, greeted by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin.

Ahead of the talks, the Kremlin said discussions would span military arrangements, economic cooperation, and wider Middle East dynamics—areas where Russia’s alignment with hostile regional regimes continues to undermine Israel’s security environment. Notably, Moscow refused to address the status of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad, reinforcing perceptions of impunity.

As Arab governments normalize repression and external patrons enable it, Israel remains the region’s primary actor openly confronting terror proxies, defending minorities, and insisting on real stability—without whitewashing abuses.
