Yeshiva Student Rabbi Avraham Ben Dayan Freed After Military Prison Custody Over Enlistment Reporting Case

Detention over enlistment sparked haredi concern, political visits, and rabbinic support upon release nationwide debate.

Rabbi Avraham Ben Dayan was released Friday morning after spending approximately a week in military prison following his arrest for failing to report for enlistment. He was detained at his home in Tifrach late Saturday night.

During his custody, Ben Dayan alleged difficult treatment, including being led in handcuffs on both hands and feet. He further claimed he was initially prevented from donning tefillin and was not allowed to study in the detention facility’s synagogue.

His arrest stirred strong reactions within the haredi community. Senior rabbinic figures reportedly reached out to strengthen the family, while Uriel Busso of Shas visited the family home in a show of solidarity.

Upon his release, family members and friends gathered to welcome him. Later in the day, he visited Rabbi Dov Lando, a leading halachic authority in the Lithuanian haredi community, receiving blessings and words of encouragement.
