NBA All-Star Weekend Erupts as Spike Lee Backtracks While Israeli Star Avdija Makes History

Filmmaker denies anti-Israel intent, but critics say milestone moment was deliberately overshadowed by politics.

NBA All-Star weekend in Los Angeles turned unexpectedly political after acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee appeared courtside wearing apparel featuring the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) flag — coinciding with Deni Avdija’s historic selection as the first Israeli-born NBA All-Star.

Facing backlash, Lee took to Instagram to clarify that his clothing was meant to express concern for Palestinian civilians and children, not hostility toward Israel or Jewish people. He stated he was unaware of Avdija’s Israeli background at the time and congratulated the Portland Trail Blazers forward on his achievement.

“Much respect to Deni Avdija… He can BALL. NOW I DO KNOW,” Lee wrote, adding, “LIVE AND LEARN. ONWARD AND UPWARD. PEACE AND LOVE.”

Critics Say Moment Was Politicized

Not everyone accepted the explanation. WFAN host Craig Carton blasted Lee, accusing him of injecting politics into what should have been a celebration of athletic excellence. Carton argued that Avdija’s accomplishment — a milestone for Israeli sports — deserved undivided recognition, free from geopolitical controversy.

He further criticized the NBA for allowing what he viewed as a distracting political display during a major league event.

LeBron Praises Avdija — Sparks Separate Debate

Meanwhile, LeBron James also became the subject of online controversy after praising Avdija’s performance and expressing interest in visiting Israel someday.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things,” James said, emphasizing his desire to inspire fans globally — including in Israel.

His remarks drew criticism from some commentators and activists on social media, who objected to positive comments about Israel amid ongoing regional tensions. James has not issued any follow-up response.

Sports and Politics Collide

The episode underscores how global conflicts increasingly spill into cultural and sporting arenas. For many supporters of Avdija, the focus remains on his groundbreaking achievement — a testament to Israel’s growing presence in international basketball. For critics of Lee, the controversy reinforced concerns about politicizing moments of unity.

At the heart of the debate lies a broader question: can sports remain a neutral space, or are global narratives inevitably part of the modern spectacle?
