Shocking abuse in French capital intensifies fears of rising Jew-hatred ahead of mayoral elections.
An elderly Jewish woman in Paris’s 19th arrondissement was allegedly subjected to antisemitic abuse during a leaflet distribution campaign linked to the far-left party La France Insoumise, according to local reporting.
The incident occurred Sunday when activists canvassing on behalf of mayoral candidate Sophia Shikiru arrived at the woman’s apartment building. After noticing a mezuzah affixed to her doorpost, the woman reportedly chose not to open the door. The activists allegedly responded by shouting antisemitic insults, including “dirty Jew,” and threatening to return before leaving the premises.
The woman immediately contacted police and is said to be considering filing a formal complaint. Security camera footage from the building entrance is under examination as investigators attempt to identify those involved.
The alleged abuse comes amid heightened concern over antisemitic incidents across the French capital. Just days earlier, the Cocorico restaurant in Paris’s 17th arrondissement was vandalized when acid was reportedly thrown across its floors and into dining areas, causing significant property damage. Authorities are investigating that case as well.
Paris has witnessed a troubling rise in antisemitic acts in recent months, prompting Jewish community leaders to call for stronger enforcement and clearer political condemnation. France, home to Europe’s largest Jewish population, has struggled with recurring waves of antisemitic violence over the past decade.
As investigations continue, the latest incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of political rhetoric, campaign conduct, and public safety in the run-up to the city’s mayoral elections.
